Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited(KETRACO)

Present

Ketraco plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the country’s high voltage energy transmission grid and regional power interconnections.

Key roles include;

  • Electrical plant- I do aerial inspection of power lines, tower inspections, asset condition monitoring and equipment replacement. I performed BDV test on 60MvA transformer oil to ensure efficient working of transformer.
  • Controls through SCADA- I monitor and inspect networks through SCADA and schedule maintenance to ensure a robust grid.
  • Protection- To ensure there’s safety of man and equipment and there’s power stability, I initiate quick corrective action to curb abnormal power system and to return the power system to its normal state.
  • Energy transmission- I build Transmission infrastructure so as to increase power access throughout the country as well as promoting power exchange and trade within the East Africa region. 

Internship

Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC(KenGen Olkaria)

Apr 2019

KenGen is the leading geothermal power producer in Africa. It has the mandate to also generate electricity from wind, solar, hydro and thermal through the development, management and operation of power plants.

 Olkaria Geothermal Development Division generates electricity from super-heated steam that is drilled from the ground. Water is heated by volcanic activity of underlying rocks to form steam. Skills acquired include;

  • Service of generators and motors – I maintained the 500kVA mobile electric generator which worked as an auxiliary generator and 1900kVA generators driving the draw works.
  • Repair and maintenance of pumps and compressors – I overhauled the Sullair Caterpillar c15 engine screw type compressor.     
  • Energy efficiency and controls in a power plant – I monitored power flow on the simulator with the intention of eliminating energy waste.                             
  • Safety in the power plant.
  • Automation- I operated power simulator, PLCs, relays and switches. 
  • Drilling system – Together with my team I did repair and maintenance of the top drive’s hydraulic system.
